We have no problems with our own deadlines. But if you can tell us, how do you get a client or customer to supply their input and ideas in a timely manner? We have one who has taken over six weeks to approve one layout for a product (he’s changed the whole concept three weeks ago) and is acting like our business is merely another department of his own. I understand customer service but people who placed orders weeks ago are still ‘thinking’ but at the same time want their finished products by the original delivery time. HELP!!!

Great tips – thanks Selene. I particularly fall victim to checking email so I have to actually close it down to make sure I don’t just flick across to see what’s landed in my inbox.

I don’t know if you’ve heard of the Pomodoro technique. It’s a great free ebook describing a productivity technique that involves disconnecting – then using a kitchen timer (the eponymous Pomodoro) to make sure you’re doing blasts of focused work. I use it and it really works – having a physical ticking timer in front of you really focuses your mind much better than a virtual one on your computer or just using your watch.

You are right-on! And that’s what made our working relationship so productive! When we corresponded, I always felt like I got the full “you,” as you didn’t allow yourself to get distracted by all the other things that can easily grab one’s attention.

I, too, believe that in order to be more focused, productive, and effective…it’s all about connecting with what’s most important in the moment, and letting all else go off the radar for the moment. This is definitely one of the biggest issues that my clients–who are busy professionals–struggle with.

Thanks for this great post and for all the helpful tips and tricks!

Nice tips. The alternative to “Using a Static Front Page” is home.php, once the home.php is created and uploaded it will pose as your default page and it will replace the index.php.

See http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Hierarchy

Once you have the home.php in place, you may do pretty much whatever you please and fully customize your WordPress to act as CMS.

Great tips, Selene. I recently (just a few months ago) turned off the incoming email notifications at work, set TweetDeck API calls back to less frequent intervals, and logged out of personal email while at work just about entirely. This has helped immensely with distractions. Disconnecting can be a powerful thing. I usually check my work email about once an hour or so throughout the day since my boss and I often communicate that way and my priorities may change if there are emails that need immediate attention. That said, I am also trying to keep as few emails in my inbox as possible. When I get an email, I try to DO the thing in the email, check it off my list, respond, or do whatever I need to do to turn that email into an action and get it done. Once I’ve done that, I delete the email (or put it in the appropriate folder). In the last month or so, I’ve managed to keep the number of emails in my inbox under ten (for the most part) and I feel like a great weight (and huge distraction) has been lifted off my shoulders.

Twitter isn’t too much of a distraction, mainly because I never get any reciprocating activity from it so it feels like a waste of time. I absolutely abhor Facebook so that one isn’t a problem. I don’t have any third-party apps and I rarely open Messenger.

There’s a setting in tweetdeck to change to make sure it actually exists (and not just minimizes) when you click the X in the corner.

I’ve also blocked myself form visiting a few sites, by redirecting them in my computer’s hosts file. (yes, seriously). Even though I know I can go change it, it’s reminder enough.

I can’t EVEN imagine setting my email client to anything more than 5 minutes let alone 2 hours! :O LOL However, you have inspired me, so I might try 30 minutes once I’m “done” with e-mail for the time being. And, do you know how many times I close my browser only to open it back up again? Too many. It’s such a distraction! I, too, put my Blackberry on “phone only” though, otherwise the alerts drive me nuts all day. Anyway, I just wanted you to know you’re not alone and I loved the tips.

Amazing tips Selene, But really hard to apply. what you are talking about in this post is the main problem of my life, I really had a very hard time to organize my time and stop wasting a big part of it on mails and social networks etc… you have really mentioned most of the solutions that i could think of(even though they are hard to apply). I could add only 1 thing which is that you really have to be 100% decided that you don’t want to waste your time and that you will not let any thing takes your attention away from you goals

Great post! Wordpress can easily be used as a CMS for small web sites, especially since the ‘pods’ plugin was released. Templates are the only issue but not really a big deal if you know a bit of CSS and HTML.

Actually after 45 hours of work/weeks any person’s productivity will start to decrease. If let’s say, you work 60 hours/week for a increased period, then the real value of your hours will be something between 25-35 hours, which is less than your initial 45 hours/week. (That’s why from a Project Management perspective overtime is always a bad idea).

IMO, the best thing to do is to hire more people to take the load off.

I had always associated WP with blogs and so had overlooked it as a CMS instead using Joomla and Drupal but after having useed WP I can honestly state I would have used it for about 90% of the others. It is also a dream to install and update.

I have enjoyed reading your article – more like how you go about a project, be it technology based or development of a product. Having been follower of processes within business environment, I like this systematic and well organized approach to making a website. I am sure many a times, you must be ending up explaining to your clients what each phase meant!! Well done Selene – keep it up!

ok, so I took a course online, and while thorough, it doesn’t tell you where to paste the snippet of code if you are in affilate marketer trying to promote other peoples products. So where do you paste product codes? So frustrated. I thought this would be fairly simple.

I live in a very rural community that is just starting to see an uprising in computer use and the web as older generations are being replaced by tech savvy generations. Still tho, competition in my town is very word of mouth. Having business cards would be a great way to get my name out there as there is little actual web development companies in my area. There are so many places I could go with these business cards and truly launch my business. The cards being eco-friendly is just an added bonus to ice the cake.

Thanks for the giveaway…..and what great timing, too! My wife and I are in the process of launching our own small business, after being laid off from the real estate services industry over a year ago. We’re taking the plunge into self employment and could definitely make good use of the biz cards as we begin marketing ourselves and our services (concierge type support services to realtors, i.e. marketing, transactional and technology support). Keep up the great posts!!

I follow you on Twitter and saw this promotion. My business partner and I were just talking about attending some trade shows and conferences this year and realized we do not have any printed business cards! Just one of the perils of running a business entirely online!

If we happen to win the 500 cards, we will have them printed for ourselves. The fact that they are eco-friendly is a BIG PLUS!!!

Time…and being organized I work hard at it..I was like you Selene…I tried to do it all,and I just got deeper and deeper behind a freind of mine came on board and got me though it and the client was happy with the work…since then I am working at time management every day
